Fully-Funded Private Insurance
Since 2007, the state of Texas has mandated fully-funded insurance companies to pay for ABA therapy as an essential treatment for children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (but put an annual limit on children over age 10). You are still required to pay the co-pay and deductible, just as you would for a normal doctor’s visit.
Self-Funded Private Insurance
About half the people in Texas are insured through self-funded plans. The state mandates do not apply to self-funded insurance. A self-funded insurance plan is when the company you work for pools their own money together to pay claims rather than contracting with an insurance company. That means it is up to individual companies to offer ABA therapy on their insurance plan or not. The only way to know whether your insurance is self-funded is to ask your employer.
Pay without Insurance
Private pay clients do not require any sort of diagnosis. SOS charges $100/hr for ABA therapy with a BCBA and $75/hr for ABA therapy with a Behavior Technician. Contact your tax preparer to find out if you can claim any costs of ABA therapy or educational supplies as a tax deductible expense.
